A Biography of Bangdel The Glory of Nepal: A Biography of Bangdel by Narendra Raj Prasai. Translated from the Nepali by Sangpo Lama. Lain Singh Bangdel was one of Nepal's artistic giants. He was a writer, painter and art historian who was admired both in Nepal and internationally. Lain grew up in a Nepali immigrant family in Darjeeling and studied at the University of Calcutta. In Calcutta he wrote novels and met many influential people such as the dramatist Balkrishna Sama and the film-maker Satyajit Ray. He lived for many years in Paris and London where he began to paint and produced some some wonderful works such as the Muna-Madan series, Mother Nepal, Pensive Mood, and Famine in Bengal. In the early 1960s he returned to Nepal, where he devoted himself for the next three decades working with the Royal Nepal Academy, the Nepal Association of Fine Arts, and the Nepal Art Council. He became an art historian and toiled tirelessly to document and protect Kathmandu's rich artistic heritage against the predations of antique smugglers. The Glory of Nepal: A Biography of Bangdel is the story of this fascinating Nepal artist, writer and scholar. "Biographies are tricky, it's so easy to miss the mark. One of the best validations is undoubtedly the subject praising the literary effort of the author. And so it is with Prasai's work. The legendary Lain Singh Bangdel lauds this biography as, 'sweetly phrased, this book makes good reading.' That's recommendation enough." -- Nepali Times, 12-18 September 2003 "I felt that I was reading a novel rather than the story of my life. The incidents that have been mentioned in this book felt like a dream to me. But it is true that after I pass on, these stories, inspite of being real incidents and events, will read like and remain a story. I will not be in this world then." -- Lain Singh Bangdel |
